Patna is the capital of Bihar, a very populated State which one regards as one of poorest of India. It has like another characteristic to have, just as Uttar Pradesh, a long terrestrial border with Nepal. The crossing of frontiers, in Raxaul, is at 6 hours of road of Patna, approximately.
By the road, Patna is to 250 km of Varanasi (Bénarès), but one goes there more easily by train or by plane.
The name Bihar derives from the term will vihara which, formerly, indicated the Buddhist monasteries. This points out the last rich person of current Patna which, in old times, was called Pataliputra at the time where it constituted the capital of king Chandragupta Gupta, the father of the emperor Ashoka (3 2nd century before our era). But earlier still, whereas the capital of the State de Maghada was Rajgir, place-strong had been built in these places, under the name of Pataligrama.
Nowadays, Patna is a large city without grace which is spread out interminably over right bank of Gange.
The purpose of the tourists who pass by Patna are generally to go in one or the other of the Buddhist sites of the area.
